Bed Poverty

Think about the last time you didn’t get a good night’s sleep. The next day felt harder, didn’t it? You may have struggled to concentrate, to be productive, or to even enjoy your day. Now imagine this isn’t a one-off, but the reality every night

For a staggering 6,000 children in the Wakefield District, this is the norm.

How can these children learn, develop, and grow when their basic needs aren’t being met? Sleep, food, and a sense of safety – these are the foundations that allow children to thrive.

The Wakefield Children’s Bed Appeal was launched as a collaboration between the Community Foundation Wakefield District, Prosper Wakefield and Zarach. We have partnered with organisations such as Gleeds, Juice Personnel, Solupak, Vico Homes, WMDC, Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers to raise funds and ensure these young people get a good night’s sleep.

Since the appeal launched last summer, it has reached a staggering £124,000, which has provided 1,482 beds for children across the district. That’s 25% of the entire cause met already.

We can’t thank supporters enough for their generosity. Your help will have a profound effect on the young people who can now sleep comfortably and soundly in a bed of their own.

The driving force was more than just a bed; a lack of sleep impacts a child’s schoolwork and potential achievements in life. It affects their relationships with their family, their friends, and even themselves. A good night’s sleep is absolutely fundamental to good physical and mental health, and it was amazing to see so many individuals and organisations passionate about making a real difference.

A bed is just the beginning.
